What is a reciprocating saw?

Often referred to as a recip saw or sabre saw, a reciprocating saw is a power tool that rapidly moves a saw blade (or any other applicable attachment) back and forth, replacing the sawing motion that a DIYer would make with a manual saw. A reciprocating saw is driven by a powerful motor. The motor converts electrical energy into mechanical energy, driving the blade at high speeds. Users can control the cutting depth and speed by adjusting the blade position and the saw’s power settings.

What is a reciprocating saw used for?

A versatile tool, a reciprocating saw is often used for demolition and rough cutting tasks. Perfect for use in small or awkward spaces, a recip saw has a variety of uses and can cut any number of materials, depending on the type of blade you choose
Demolition: Tearing down walls, cutting through drywall, plaster, and old framing, and removing old fixtures or nails.
Plumbing and electrical work: Cutting metal and plastic pipes, conduit, and wiring in tight spaces where other tools might not fit
Wood cutting: Rough-cutting lumber, trimming branches, cutting through nail-embedded wood, breaking down pallets, cutting fence posts and green sleepers.
Metal cutting: Cutting sheet metal, conduit, and pipes without the sparks produced by an angle grinder.
Masonry and tile:
Removing old grout (requires a specialised attachment).
Flush cuts: Cut closer to the surface where circular saws normally can't reach

Are reciprocating saw blades universal?

Most reciprocating saws - including Evolutions - use a universal shank system. This shank is compatible with all major brands including Bosch, DeWalt, Makita and Milwaukee.
While blade fitting is often universal, you still need to select the right kind of blade depending on the type of material you are cutting.
At Evolution we sell 2 blade packs:
Our Evolution Wood Cutting Reciprocating Saw Blades (x2) features one green wood blade, ideal for pruning and cutting both green and fuel wood, and one general wood blade with a 4mm tooth diameter for fast and smooth cuts.
Our Evolution Multi-Material Cutting Reciprocating Saw Blades (x2) contains one high-tooth-count, thin steel blade, ideal for cutting sheet and mild steel as well as harder non-ferrous metals, plus a 2nd deeper tooth blade optimised for ripping through aluminium, plastics and other softer materials.

Can a reciprocating saw cut through metal and steel?

Yes, a reciprocating saw can cut metal, steel, aluminium, copper and more, but only when using a blade specifically designed for the task. You must choose the correct blade for the type of metal you are cutting. Generally, use blades with higher teeth per inch for slower, smoother cuts on metal. Consider using cutting oil for some applications.

Can a reciprocating saw cut through bricks and concrete?

Yes, a reciprocating saw can cut concrete, but only when equipped with a specialised blade designed for masonry, such as a carbide-tipped or diamond-tipped blade. Standard wood or metal blades will not work and will be damaged quickly on concrete. While most brands of universal fit concrete cutting blades will fit the Evolution corded and cordless reciprocating saws, we don't yet sell these blades. For the best results, use a blade with a wide body, coarse teeth, and a low teeth-per-inch (TPI) count.

Can a reciprocating saw cut tree branches?

Yes, a reciprocating saw can cut tree branches and also tree roots. It is a very effective and popular tool for this job.

Just make sure you are using the right blade, such as our Evolution Wood Cutting Reciprocating Saw Blades (x2). When cutting tree roots, you should dig around the roots first to expose them and use a blade designed for pruning or demolition.
