FAQs

What is a Mitre Saw and what can it cut?

A mitre saw is a power tool designed for making accurate straight, angled, and bevel cuts. It features a circular blade mounted on a pivoting arm, allowing you to set precise, repeatable angles for different types of cuts.

Traditionally used for woodworking, Evolution mitre saws go further. Every model comes with a multi-material blade, so you can cut new and reclaimed timber, mild steel, non-ferrous metals, plastics, and composites. This makes them ideal for DIY projects and professional 1st and 2nd fix work.

What are the different types of Mitre Saw?

There are four main types of mitre saw, each designed for specific cutting tasks

  • Compound Mitre Saws – Makes mitre and bevel cuts at the same time, perfect for complex angles.
  • Sliding Mitre Saws – Also move forward as well as up and down, allowing deeper cuts on wider boards.
  • Single Bevel Mitre Saws – Tilts in one direction for bevel cuts. Perfect for simpler projects needing fewer angled cuts.
  • Double Bevel Mitre Saws – Tilts both left and right, saves time by making multiple angled cuts without repositioning your material.

What is a Compound Mitre Saw?

A compound mitre saw lets you make two angled cuts at the same time: a mitre cut (horizontal angle) and a bevel cut (vertical angle). This is ideal for jobs like dado rails, cornices, and skirting boards where two pieces of wood need to meet perfectly without gaps.

What is a Sliding Compound Mitre Saw?

A sliding compound mitre saw combines the dual-angle cutting ability of a compound mitre saw with a sliding carriage. This allows the saw head to move forward as well as up and down, giving you a much greater cross-cut capacity than a non-sliding saw of the same blade size.

Sliding compound mitre saws are perfect for cutting wide boards and are widely used in woodworking, DIY, and construction projects where precision and repeatability matter.

What's the difference between a Single and Double Bevel Mitre Saw?

A single bevel mitre saw has a head that tilts in one direction only, so bevel cuts can be made on one side of the material.

A double bevel mitre saw tilts both left and right, allowing bevel cuts on both sides without flipping the workpiece. This saves time and improves accuracy, making it ideal for complex, decorative work such as crown moulding where precise angles are essential.

How accurate are Mitre Saws?

Evolution Mitre Saws offer repeatable cut accuracy to within half a degree for Bevel and Mitre cuts. Our adjustable depth stops mean you can make perfectly accurate trench cuts with almost zero variance across the entire trench.

The accuracy that you can achieve from your saw will depend on how carefully you calibrate the saw. A few minutes spent with a square or digital angle finder during initial assembly will repay you with greater cut accuracy.

Do I push or pull the blade when cutting with a Mitre Saw?

When using a sliding mitre saw, start with the blade closest to you. Then start the blade, lower it into the material, and then push it away smoothly to complete the cut.

Push down and forward through the material in a controlled motion. This helps prevent the blade from climbing or grabbing the workpiece, ensuring a cleaner, safer cut.

Do all Mitre Saws have dust extraction?

All Evolution Mitre Saws have can be connected to powered dust extraction systems to help keep your workspace clean. The Evolution R15VAC Wet and Dry Workshop Vacuum can be used with all of our Mitre Saws and offer remote start-up when used with the 185mm, 210mm and Single Bevel 255mm Mitre Saws.

Are Mitre Saws Safe?

Like all power tools, mitre saws can be dangerous if used incorrectly. Evolution mitre saws include multiple safety features to make cutting as safe as possible - even for beginners:

  • Workpiece clamps to secure materials during cutting.
  • Ambidextrous handles for better control and comfort.
  • Full blade guards that cover the blade when not in use.

Always wear suitable eye and hearing protection, read the manufacturer’s instructions, and contact our customer service team if you need help.

Do I need a Mitre Saw Stand?

If you are going to be moving your Mitre Saw around, using it on-site, and taking it with you to various job locations then a Mitre Saw Stand will be incredibly helpful. Our Mitre Saw Stand will help safely support long and heavy workpieces while allowing you to make more accurate, repeatable cuts.

If you are going to be locating your Mitre Saw in a dedicated workshop then it’s usual to build it into a bench so that the top surface of the bench is level with the cutting surface of the Mitre Saw.

How does the rear fence work on a Mitre Saw?

The rear fence provides a backstop to hold the workpiece securely during cutting when used with a front clamp or top clamp. These are adjustable and can be moved inwards and outwards to accommodate various blade cutting angles.
