FAQs
1. What Materials Can a Disc Cutter Be Used for?
Evolution Disc Cutters use diamond saw blades which are designed to cut through brick, stone, granite and even some strong metals,
General Purpose Diamond Blades, Premium Diamond Blades and EvoMax Thin-Kerf Diamond Blades are designed to cut:
Bricks and blocks, including engineering brick, roof tiles, cured and reinforced concrete and soft natural stone, including paving slabs, limestone and sandstone
For Hard quartz-based stone choose either Premium Diamond Blades or EvoMax Thin Kerf Diamond Blades.
Choose our Multi-Material Diamond Blades for outstanding results when cutting iron, steel & stainless steel, aluminium, wood, plastic (including reinforced plastic) and abrasive material.
If cutting porcelain tiles, we would advise using our R260DCT-Li battery-powered disc cutter and our EvoMax Thin Kerf Blade. The manufacturing process makes porcelain tile brittle and easy to crack when cutting. Wet tile cutting is recommended for porcelain tiles, as it helps to reduce chipping and breakage. Our EvoMax Thin Kerf Blade is the only blade we would recommend for optimal cutting for tiles from our blade collection.
2. How Often Should I Replace My Disc Cutter Blade?
A Disc Cutter blade should be replaced when:
- It shows visible signs of wear and tear, such as chips or cracks.
- It affects the performance of your machine - any excessive vibration or unusual noises could indicate the blade needs replacement.
- You see poorer performance - If cuts are slower and harder to make, it could be a sign the blade is ready to retire.
- It’s past its expiration date - This is due to bonding agents degrading over time, meaning the blade likely won’t perform at its best.
3. Are Diamond Blades Made From Real Diamonds?
No. Diamond blades use incredibly tough synthetic diamond shards, which are moulded to the blade and blade edges to create an extremely sharp cutting tool capable of cutting through the most rugged materials with ease and precision.
4. Are Evolution disc cutter blades compatible with other brands saws?
Many Evolution blades fit other disc cutters, but always check arbor size, blade diameter, and safety ratings.
For best performance and warranty coverage, use Evolution blades with Evolution tools.
R230DCT, R255DCT, R250DCT-Li: 22.2mm arbor
R300DCT & R300DCT+, R350DCT: Reversible flange mount for 20mm and 22.2mm blades
5. Should you cut wood using a diamond blade?
It’s possible, but not recommended to cut through wood with a diamond blade. Diamond blades are most suited to cutting through very tough materials, like stone and brick. Wood is a lot softer than these materials and will offer very little resistance. The force of the blade would likely cause damage to the wood rather than a clean cut, as well as cause other safety concerns. You should always use the correct blade for the job at hand. We also stock multi-material cutting diamond blades for our disc cutters, which are ideal for cutting a host of different materials such as metal, concrete and more.
6. Why Are Masonry/Disc Cutter Blades Segmented?
Disc Cutter Blades are segmented for a number of key reasons:
- To prevent overheating - The slots in the blade allow for more airflow, cooling the blade and preventing overheating. They are particularly important when using the Disc Cutter for dry cuts.
- They assist with the removal of debris or slurry if wet cutting.
- Allow more flexibility - when the blades are used for some time they will generate heat and expand, the slots cater to this meaning your blades are much less likely to crack.
7. How Long Will a Diamond Disc Cutter Blade Last Cutting Concrete?
Typically, a diamond blade cutting concrete will last anything from 12 to 120 hours+.
This is dependent on which blade you are using and the conditions you are using it in, as well as whether you are dry or wet cutting.
