FAQs

What is a Mitre Saw?

A Mitre Saw is a tool designed to make precise straight, angled or bevel cuts in a variety of materials. A Mitre Saw usually consists of a circular saw blade mounted on a sturdy pivoting arm that allows adjustment to precise repeatable angles across multiple axis.

Mitre Saws are most commonly used for woodworking tasks. All Evolution Mitre Saws are fitted with Multi-material cutting blades that uniquely allow them to cut new and reclaimed wood, mild steel and non-ferrous metals as well as plastics and composites, making them the ideal choice for DIY users and tradesmen working on 1st and 2nd Fix.

What is a Compound Mitre Saw?

A compound Mitre Saw allows you to make two kinds of angled cuts simultaneously through your workpiece, Mitre and Bevel cuts, these are ideal for dado rails, cornice, skirting and anywhere else where you need to intersect two pieces of wood without a gap.

A bevel cut passes through the material with a vertical angle, a Mitre cut passes through the material at a horizontal angle. A compound cut occurs when you angle the blade along both axis at once.

Compound Mitre Saws are more versatile than basic Mitre saws and offer the ability to make a range of complex compound cuts.

What is a Sliding Compound Mitre Saw?

A Sliding Compound Mitre Saw has the functionality of a Compound Mitre Saw but also adds in a sliding carriage that allows the saw head to traverse through a workpiece giving a greater maximum cross-cut than would usually be achievable with a none sliding saw with the same blade size. Typically the maximum cross cut capacity exceeds the diameter of the blade.

Sliding Compound Mitre Saws are used in woodworking, DIY, construction and wherever a high degree of precision and repeatability is required by the user.

What is the difference between a Single and Double Bevel Mitre Saw?

A Single Bevel Mitre Saw has a saw head that only tilts (bevels) in one direction. A Double Bevel Saw can rotate both left and right, about the vertical plane, to make bevel cuts on both sides without having to flip the workpiece.

A Double Bevel Mitre Saw provides greater versatility and precision. These saws are ideal for making complex, decorative cuts on intricate work, such as crown moulding where cut angle precision must be exact in both directions.

What size Mitre Saw should I buy?

Buy the Mitre Saw that offers a cross-cut size slightly larger than required for the type of work you are planning. The R210CMS+ has a cross-cut capacity of 125x55mm. The R185SMS+ has a cross-cut capacity of 210x55mm. The R210SMS+ has a cross-cut capacity of 230x65mm. The R210SMS-300+ has a cross-cut capacity of 300x65mm. The R255SMS+ has a cross-cut capacity of 300x80mm and the R255SMS-DB+ Double Bevel has a cross-cut capacity of 300x90mm.

What is the difference between the R210SMS+ and the R210SMS-300+?

The R210SMS-300+ Mitre Saw uses longer sliding rails than the R210SMS+ and this gives you a maximum crosscut capacity of 300mm, 70mm longer than the R210SMS+. The greater cross-cut capacity of the ‘300’ version makes it a better choice for larger cuts; it’s perfect for chopping down 12x2 floor joists and skirting boards up to 12”.

What direction does the blade face?

The teeth on all our Mitre Saw blades should point downwards when the blade is installed correctly. The blade rotates in a clockwise direction and you cut on the down stroke when simply chopping and cut on the push stroke when using the slide.

Where can I use my Mitre Saw?

Evolution’s plug-in Mitre Saws are compact and can easily be moved between the jobsite and a home workshop. They can be used on any flat surface, bench mounted, used on a Sawhorse Table or fitted to our Universal Mitre Saw Stand

Evolution’s Cordless 18v EXT Mitre Saws can be used anywhere. These light, powerful, compact and accurate Mitre Saws are perfect for home workshop and trade use on construction sites.

Do I push or pull the blade when cutting with a Mitre Saw?

When cutting with an Evolution Mitre Saw you should always push the blade through the material – from you to the workpiece. Pulling the blade through the material can be dangerous, it will give a worse cut and is likely to damage your blade.

Our Mitre Saw Stand will help safely support long and heavy workpieces while allowing you to make more accurate, repeatable cuts.

If you are going to be locating your Mitre Saw in a dedicated workshop then it’s usual to build it into a bench so that the top surface of the bench is level with the cutting surface of the Mitre Saw.

Are Mitre Saw stands universal?

The Evolution Universal Mitre Saw Stand will fit mitre saws from many popular brands and all of Evolution’s mitre saws. We call it the Universal Mitre Saw Stand as it works with so many other brands due to the innovative, quick release clamping system.

Are Mitre Saw blades universal?

Mitre Saw blades are not usually universal between different brands. Care must be taken when selecting Mitre Saw blades to make sure that the tooth count, maximum speed, bore size and kerf thickness are suitable for your mitre saw.

It is unsafe to fit an incorrect blade to any mitre saw.

How long will my blade last?

Blade life depends on the material being cut, the harder the material the shorter the blade life will be. Evolution only uses premium, Japanese sourced carbide in our saw blades. It’s better finished, tougher and longer lasting than more commonly used carbide grades.

Cleaning the teeth of your blade, especially if cutting exterior grades of wood will help to keep your blade running cleanly by removing sap and resin build up. We recommend using a cloth dampened with spray-on automotive brake cleaner to keep your blades in pristine condition.

Can a Mitre Saw cut 4 x 4?

The maximum cut depth on a Mitre Saw depends on the blade size and the clearance around the blade guard. To cut an actual 4x4 (100 x 100mm) wooden post in a single pass a blade larger than 300mm would be required.

Can a Mitre Saw cut metal?

All Evolution corded and cordless Mitre Saws can cut metal as well as wood, plastic and composites straight out of the box with our Multi-material blade. All of our Mitre Saws will cut mild steel stock, aluminium and other non-ferrous metals.

What is the best blade for cutting laminate flooring?

The best Evolution saw blades for cutting Laminate flooring are either the Fine Wood blades or the Thin Steel blades. The Fine Wood blade will be best for wood based laminate flooring types. Vinyl Laminate flooring boards often include a high wear protective coating on the top surface, made with aluminium oxide, which is incredibly hard wearing, for these types of flooring we recommend the Thin Steel blade which has a higher tooth count and therefore minimizes the abrasive wear caused by the protective wear layer.

Are Mitre Saws Safe?

All power tools can be dangerous if handled incorrectly. Evolution mitre Saws include multiple safety features designed to make cutting safely as easy as possible even for novice users.

Evolution Mitre Saws all features workpiece clamps to help secure the materials being cut. Our saws feature ambidextrous handles allowing for easy control of each cut. Our saws feature full coverage blade guards that cover the entire blade when not cutting.

  • Double bevel - for making multiple angled cuts, without moving your material.
  • Compound - for making mitre cuts and bevelled cuts at the same time.
  • Sliding - these saws can move forward as well as up and down, for deeper cuts.

How do you use an Evolution Mitre Saw?

Easy. Mark your material for your desired cut and line it up with the saw’s blade. While keeping the material stable, slowly lower the blade through your marker until it has passed through completely. Allow the blade to come to a complete stop before you reposition and repeat as needed, following all necessary safety steps along the way.
