How to Build a DIY Key Holder Shelf

A key holder shelf is a quick DIY project that helps keep your hallway tidy and organised. In this guide, Ruth shows you how to make a simple wooden key holder using a few pieces of timber and your Evolution cordless tools. It’s beginner-friendly, easy to customise, and ideal for storing keys, sunglasses and everyday essentials right by your front door.

Tools Used

Materials

  • Wood glue
  • A sheet of pine
  • Hooks
  • Paint
  • Sandpaper
  • Screws

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Cut Your Timber to Size

Choose a length that fits your hallway space - Ruth kept hers compact to avoid overcrowding the entryway.

Start by cutting your backboard - you can draw around a plate to create a circle stencil and then cut the shape out using a jigsaw.

Next, cut a small rectangular shelf piece to length. This should be the same width as your circle backboard.

Sand any rough edges as you go.

Step 2: Attach the Shelf to the Backboard

Use wood glue and screws to secure the shelf to the backboard. Drill pilot holes using your Evolution cordless drill and then use the impact driver to secure the screws. Keep the board level while tightening so everything sits flush.

Step 3: Decorate

Sand any rough edges until smooth and then finish with varnish, stain or paint. Ruth used a primer and then painted it blue to match her decor.

Step 4: Add Hooks

Ruth used self-adhesive hooks, but you can choose any hooks you like and either glue or screw them into place. Other options could be: use dowels instead of hooks, or add a small front lip to the shelf for sunglasses, wallets, post and everyday items.

Step 5: Mount the Key Holder Shelf

Choose the ideal height near your front door and mark your fixing points. Drill a pilot hole in your backboard and drill wall plugs using your Evolution cordless drill and mount the shelf securely. Once fitted, add your keys and daily essentials - everything right where you need it.

Final Tips

  • Keep the shelf shallow if it's going in a narrow hallway
  • Use hardwood dowels if you want extra-strong pegs
  • Add a second, matching shelf for extra storage
