Why Evolution's Metal Cutting Mitre Saw Changed Steel Fabrication Forever

Why move the material when you can move the saw?

Discover how Evolution's innovative Metal Cutting Mitre Saw transformed steel fabrication, and how customer feedback inspired an even better Generation 2.

Walk into almost any fabrication workshop and you'll find a chop saw. They're fast, powerful and ideal for straight cuts, but when accurate mitre cuts are required, the process has traditionally involved repositioning the workpiece for every angle. Measuring, unclamping, moving the material and clamping it again all take time and increase the opportunity for error.

At Evolution, we challenged that convention.

Rather than moving the material, why not move the saw?

That simple engineering decision led to the development of the original S355MCS – the world's first heavy-duty cold-cut metal cutting mitre saw designed specifically for professional steel fabrication. By keeping the workpiece securely clamped while the saw head rotates through ±46°, it introduced a faster, easier and more repeatable way to produce accurate mitre cuts.

Solving A Fabrication Problem

Evolution has spent more than 30 years developing cold-cut metal cutting technology, helping fabricators move away from the limitations of abrasive cutting.

As more workshops adopted cold-cut saws for their speed, accuracy and cleaner finish, one challenge remained. Producing mitre cuts still meant repositioning the workpiece every time the angle changed.

The S355MCS was developed to solve that problem.

Instead of rotating the material, the saw head mitres while the workpiece remains securely clamped. The result is faster setup, greater consistency and improved repeatability, particularly when producing multiple identical components such as gates, railings, structural steel and fabrication frames.

Combined with Evolution's cold-cut technology, fabricators also benefit from fast, clean cuts with virtually no sparks, no abrasive dust and a smooth burr-free finish that's ready for immediate handling or welding.

Trusted By Professional Fabricators

The S355MCS wasn't designed as an occasional workshop tool. It was engineered for people who cut steel every day.

Customer research found that around 71% of S355MCS owners were trade professionals, including fabricators, metalworkers, installers, maintenance engineers and agricultural users.

Even more telling, 80% use the saw at least once every week, with many relying on it daily as part of their fabrication workflow.

When asked why they chose the S355MCS, the same themes appeared again and again:

  • Accurate mitre cuts
  • Fast, clean cold-cut performance
  • Reduced finishing time
  • Improved productivity
  • Professional build quality

Owners described the saw as "the best investment for my workshop", and "a game changer"  and several wishing they'd bought the Mitering Chop Saw years earlier because of the time it saves during fabrication.

Listening To Fabricators

Evolution has always believed that the best product ideas come from the people using the tools every day.

Rather than guessing what Generation 2 should become, we asked existing owners what they would improve.

While the overwhelming majority praised the saw's accuracy, productivity and build quality, several common themes emerged.

Fabricators asked for:

  • Longer blade life
  • Better cut-line visibility
  • Greater platform rigidity
  • Improved chip management
  • Faster blade stopping after each cut

These weren't requests for a different machine. They were practical refinements that would make an already highly regarded fabrication saw even better.

Developing Generation 2

Generation 2 wasn't designed to replace what already worked. It was engineered to improve the areas that matter most to professional fabricators.

At the heart of the new machine is the EVOMAX Performance System.
Rather than treating the blade and motor as separate components, Evolution engineers developed them as a complete cutting system. EVOMAX Intelligent Motor Technology works together with the premium EVOMAX Long-Life Cermet Blade to optimise cutting performance, maximise blade life and reduce downtime.

Generation 2 also introduces an integrated Shadowline Cut Guide, projecting the exact blade path onto the workpiece for faster alignment and greater confidence before every cut.

Together with a reinforced fabrication platform, the proven heavy-duty clamping system and Evolution's unique mitre mechanism, the result is the most capable Metal Cutting Mitre Saw we've ever built.

Independently Recognised. Customer Approved.

The improvements introduced on Generation 2 have already been recognised by both professional users and the wider industry.

Following its North American launch, the S355MCS-G2 achieved an average customer review rating of 4.9 out of 5 and received a 2025 Pro Tool Innovation Award in the Automotive & Metalworking category.

More importantly, every major improvement can be traced back to real conversations with fabricators. Rather than adding technology for technology's sake, Evolution focused on solving genuine workshop challenges: improving blade life, increasing cutting accuracy and making an already productive machine even easier to use.

Continuing To Raise The Standard

The original S355MCS created an entirely new category by combining precision mitre cutting with Evolution's cold-cut technology.

Generation 2 builds on that legacy with meaningful improvements inspired by the people who rely on the machine every day.

For professional fabricators, welders and serious metalworkers, it isn't simply another mitre saw.

It's the next evolution of a tool that continues to redefine accurate, productive and repeatable steel fabrication.
