How to Build a DIY Sofa Table
Build a stylish DIY sofa table using Evolution cordless tools. Ruth shows you how to create a practical behind-the-sofa console table with clean cuts, simple joinery and a smart cable slot - perfect for adding extra storage and surface space to your living room.
A sofa table is a brilliant way to add extra storage and surface space behind your sofa - perfect for lamps, books, drinks or simply filling an empty gap behind your seating area. In this guide, Ruth shows you how to build a simple and stylish wooden sofa table using Evolution cordless tools.
It’s a quick and beginner-friendly project that you can easily customise to suit your room.
Tools Used
- Evolution Cordless Double Bevel Sliding Mitre Saw (R255SMS-DB-Li)
- Evolution Cordless Combi Drill (R13CMB-Li)
- Evolution Cordless Impact Driver (R180IDR-Li)
- Evolution Cordless Jigsaw (R90JGS-Li)
Materials
- 90˚ brackets
- Planed oak
- Lengths of softwood timber
- Power socket (optional)
- Clear wax or paint
- Screws
- Wood glue
Step 1: Measure Behind Your Sofa
Start by measuring the space behind your sofa so your table fits neatly without sticking out.
Measure the overall width, height, and depth available.
Ruth sized her table to sit slightly lower than the back of the sofa and narrow enough to rest comfortably in the gap.
Once you have your measurements, mark up your timber ready for cutting.
Step 2: Cut Your Timber to Size
Begin by cutting all of the table components - the top panel, side pieces, cross supports and any lower shelf panels.
Use the Evolution R255SMS-DB-Li Mitre Saw to make quick, clean and accurate cuts. The cordless mitre saw is ideal for this kind of DIY furniture build as it handles repeated straight cuts with ease.
Lay out the pieces on the floor so you can visualise the assembly before moving on.

Step 3: Cut the Socket Slot (Optional)
If you plan to use your sofa table for lamps or device chargers, add a socket to the top panel.
- Draw around your socket to mark where to cut a hole in the wood.
- Drill a hole at each corner to fit the jigsaw blade through.
- Connect the holes using a Jigsaw to form a clean, smooth opening. This small detail makes the table much more practical for hiding cords behind the sofa.

Step 4: Assemble
- Position the vertical legs and the top panel.
- Drill pilot holes using a Combi Drill to prevent splitting.
- Fix everything together using the Impact Driver.
Make sure both frames are identical in height and alignment - this ensures the finished table sits level and stable.

Step 5: Sand and Finish
With the structure complete, give the whole table a good sand to smooth any sharp edges or rough cuts. Once sanded, you can finish the sofa table however you like:
- Natural oil
- Wood stain
- Paint
- Clear varnish
Ruth left her table with a natural finish and some clear wax to show off the wood grain, but you can choose whatever best suits your home decor.
Step 6: Position and Style Your Table
Slide your finished table into place behind your sofa.
Use it to hold lamps, plants, books, drinks or chargers - or simply to make use of an awkward space in your living room.
A simple project, a few cordless tools, and you’ve added a stylish, functional piece of furniture to your home.

Final Tips
- Choose timber with minimal warping for straighter builds
- Sand everything before assembly for a smoother finish
- Add felt pads if your table will rest against a wall
- Consider adding USB ports or LED lighting for extra functionality
