Looking to spark creativity and adventure in your garden? This DIY Kids Teepee project is a brilliant way to create a unique outdoor space for play, reading, or just relaxing in the shade.

Built entirely from timber and powered by Evolution tools, this eye-catching teepee is surprisingly simple to make - and it’s a fantastic weekend or even one-afternoon build for beginner DIYers.

Watch the video below for a detailed step-by-step guide with Joe Whitaker. There are some notes and diagrams below for extra help.

🧰 Tools & Materials

Tools Required:

  • Mitre saw
  • Drill/driver
  • Circular saw/track saw (optional if the edges need tidying up after assembling)
  • Tape measure
  • Safety gear (goggles, dust mask, gloves)

Materials List:

  • Decking boards (for horizontal slats)
  • CLS timber (for teepee frame legs)
  • Exterior screws
  • Wood glue (optional)
  • Sandpaper (optional)
  • Exterior wood stain or paint (optional)

✂️ Cutting List & Diagrams

Use the cutting plans and visuals to prepare your pieces in advance.

📐 Finished Dimensions

The final teepee stands approx. 1690mm tall with a 1500mm base width — perfect for children and large enough for imaginative play.

 🔨 Step-by-Step Build Guide

1. Cut the Frame and Slats

Start by cutting the 4 angled upright legs from CLS timber, along with the decking slats that will form the horizontal layers of the teepee (at this stage you only need to cut the 3 top pieces and 3 base pieces). All dimensions and angles are included in the cutting list.

2. Assemble the Teepee Frame

Position two angled frame legs into an A-frame, securing them together at the top and base with the decking boards as horizontal cross braces to stabilise the structure.

3. Fix Horizontal Slats

Starting from the top, screw in the decking boards horizontally to fill the A-frame with slats. Space them evenly to allow light in and create the classic open teepee shape.

Repeat this process so you have two A-frames complete with horizontal slats. Then position the two frames together and begin to fit the horizontal slats on the back of the teepee.

4. Finishing Touches (optional)

Smooth any rough patches and edges to make the structure kid-safe. If desired, apply a weatherproof, child-safe stain to add colour and protection.

🖌️ Customisation Ideas

  • Add fairy lights or bunting for a magical touch.
  • Drape a weatherproof fabric over the frame for shade.
  • Paint it in themed colours (woodland, beach hut, etc.).
  • Add cushions or mats inside for reading or rest time.
